Our Programs

At St. Joseph College of Nursing, Mbaise, we are committed to producing highly skilled, compassionate, and professionally competent nurses and midwives who meet the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and are ready to serve within Nigeria and internationally. Our programs combine rigorous classroom instruction, hands-on simulation training, and supervised clinical practice to ensure every graduate is confident and job-ready from day one. We currently offer two NMCN-accredited* programs: National Diploma, Nursing Program and Basic Midwifery Program

National Diploma (ND), Nursing Program

Nursing remains one of the most in-demand professions in the world, with nursing graduates consistently reporting strong employment outcomes shortly after certification. At St. Joseph College of Nursing, we ensure every student receives real professional value from their training — grounded in evidence-based instruction that prepares them to excel both in their qualifying examinations and in real-world clinical practice.

What you’ll learn:
The National Diploma (ND), Nursing program equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to deliver safe, evidence-based, and compassionate care across the lifespan — from pediatric to adult and geriatric nursing. Core areas of study typically include:

  • Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry
  • Fundamentals of Nursing
  • Medical-Surgical Nursing
  • Pediatric Nursing
  • Community and Public Health Nursing
  • Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing
  • Pharmacology and Nutrition
  • Nursing Research and Ethics
  • Nursing Jurisprudence and Professional Practice

Clinical Training:
Our experienced clinical instructors guide students through a range of specialty nursing placements in affiliated teaching hospitals and health facilities, complemented by simulated practical training in our ultra-modern demonstration/skills laboratory. This blended approach ensures students build confidence and competence before stepping into full clinical responsibility.

Basic Midwifery Program

The Basic Midwifery program will prepare you to provide expert, well informed and compassionate care to women, newborn infants and their families as a qualified midwife. Midwives work across the spectrum from pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, labour and child birth, postpartum and newborn infants’ life.

This program covers all aspects of midwifery including supporting mothers in a wide variety of ways after the birth; encouraging recommended vaccinations, promoting breastfeeding, establishing feeding routines, routine assessment, and discussing contraceptive choices where necessary. There is a strong focus on linking theory to practice with part of the course delivered in classroom and the other part taught in clinical posting

Applicants for the Basic midwifery Program must hold the Senior Secondary School Certificate from West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) with minimum of five subjects at credit level including English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.

At the successful completion of the program, you will be eligible to register with Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria as a Registered Midwife (RM)
